Ive aslso Received unsolicited SMS, one per week for
payment from funnyvid the Pptout number
provided was 1300 464 05. I rung this number twice. The answer "this number is not available at present try again in a short time". voice was Filipino,
a clear scam.
I checked my telstra bill and found 5 Third Party purchases billled me for $35.95....I never use any funny vid!
Phoned telstra..After some confusion found the bill at their end had no third party billing..so why is in on my Telstra account?
This need action taken. This scamming traces back to Telstra 3rd party practices

Charges appear on my phone bill for $6.90 every 7 days. The bill shows my own phone number as the source but iiNet had advised the biller actually was Mirror Image Access, a company that I had never heard of and certainly had not used any of their products or services.

SCAM: Connected to internet via phone hotspot. Received confirmation on my mobile of subscription to funnyvids without any interaction or confirmation with this scammer. Contacted Telstra who referred me to provider. Provider stated would send cheque refund - didn't. Months later contacted them again as refund not received. They apologised stating they had the wrong address. Corrected - no refund received.

Economies of scale: (small cost which most will ignore) X (how many people affected) X (how many charges per person) - (how many people seek refund). Its a business from which 1300360054 and Telstra obtain a financial benefit.

Fraud = wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

I am being charged $6.95 per week for nothing. I didn't ask for it and I am unaware of how and why! I cannot seem to delete the number and the Opt Out doesn't do anything.
Help please

I have not authorised FunnyVid to charge my account yet they are. They send me texts prompting an opt out option via a premium service reply number. God only knows how much they will slug for that! Attempts to test "stop" the free call 1300364054 fail to deliver. This is clearly a scam at all levels. Surely it should also be illegal to charge opt out replies.

As others - I too have unauthorised charges related to HotXL. Rang Digital Turbine who offered a full refund almost immediately - no arguments, so they know its a scam

I found I have been SCAMED by Digital Turbine to my Optus wireless dongle number for SMS messages? I have spent hours trying to get to the bottom of it
Would't this be a story that 60 Minutes should be informed of ?

I started getting "Subscription to HOTXL $9.99 a week please opt out with XXXX XXXX" text. I never subscribed to ANYTHING so I ignored thinking thinking its just spam. Kept getting the text for 10 weeks and finally called optus about it. Apparently I was being charged $39.99 a month for a total of $100. Optus blew me away and took the whole amount off by crediting my account $100 even though she stated she'll get into trouble as it's more than 2 billing cycles gone. Make sure to chase these up people and call your provider asap. I got lucky!

My Optus.com mobiloe and laptop account was charged an unauthorised $9.99 per week.Complaints to Optus via telephone, online email and online chat received helpful attention but failed to stop the nuisance.
Attempts to "opt out" by using the phone number 1300364054 were also unsuccessful.

I have not authorized use and I have SMS on my mobile to stop this use on 2Fun.mobi. I am still being charged $8.99 per week. They have no right to continue to charge me for it.

Weekly charge of approx. $10 through Telstra for HotXL by provider Digital Turbine. Telstra made it VERY difficult, expecting me to rectify the situation. Telstra obviously know about the scam but are doing nothing to stop it.

My complaint follows the same issue as many others: I did not subscribe or authorise any transaction or account with 2Fun.mobi and was sent messages to my mobile wifi device. This is clearly a scam that Telstra is facilitating by allowing third party billing and access to Telstra internet service accounts.I commend Telstra for quickly barring premium sms services from my mobile device in the future however, a third party should not be able to access my service provider account in the first place.

Same problem here, this has been going on for 2 months until i just noticed the account. The phone number is not connected and i don't even have a phone. I have a 4g Ipad so i don't know where this has come from. My contract is with Telstra and not any third party advertiser or service provider so Telstra should not be billing other businesses services and having no responsibility. Totally disgusted with Telstra at this point.

I didnt know anything was happening until I received my monthly phone bill from Optus. I noticed HotXL was hitting my laptop modem at 1.40 pm every Monday for $9.08. Rang Optus who put a bar on it which has worked. My modem is in effect a mobile phone with its own number. Cant get my money back though.

I was charged on my Telstra account for Third Party Services 2Fun.mobi $8.99/week. I contacted Telstra who could only stop future charges, couldn't provide a credit back from a Third Party Provider. They did how ever put me in contact with somebody from 2Fun.mobi to sort out a credit. The only solution they could offer was to credit the amount back in the form of a cheque, but only after i provided them with more personal details. As If !!!

Same problem as others in this post. I was tethering on my mobile to my PC and i ran into malware while browsing using chrome. The site said it failed . I guess I am ok on prepaid? I got the same SMS

What is interesting is that the tethering stopped. Proves that your own mobile is not safe connected to your own PC

I have put a barring on premium SMS on my number now. What number can i call telstra to check.

Same, i clicked no terms and conditions

Caught by the same scam after tethering my mobile phone (Windows Mobile) got the message "Hi you are subscribed to Mobistore.mobi costing you $6.99/wk on your next bill. Optout SMS STOP to ...."

I SMSed STOP then contacted Telstra today about blocking 3rd party subscriptions from my account.

wow I was on a film download site and opened up a page. as usual when pop up page comes I quickly delete but for 2nd time in about a month got similar texts to you guys only I'm lucky to be on prepaid so they cannot get me.

what I cant comprehend is HOW THE HELL DID THEY KNOW MY MOBILE NUMBER??? to contact me seeing as I use my home internet connection which are completely separate???

I religiously clean cookies etc etc so a bit scary as to how they could know my mobile number!!!

Any similar experiences?

Thanks.

P.s. prepaid mobile is gold!!!

Same as above.... Tethered to my pc. You get a pop-up, you don't even need to click on anything to get the SMS. Quite a clever scam to be quite honest. Contacted Optus to block premium SMS, past that they were F'N useless. They gave me the complaints number for the premium SMS provider 1300724406 and made it my problem. They, then put a block on my number and then told me they don't do refunds:) , since I must have agreed to their terms and conditions! After dropping the F bomb and telling them I was calling the Police a refund was processed. I hate to think how much money they're making out of this from people that can't find them, can't be bothered complaining , or don't hold their ground when they refuse to do a refund.

Same here, text saying I am being charged $6.99 and charge showing in my Telstra app, did not request any service but still got text. Complained to Telstra who said they will waive charge but still showing on account. Lodged complaint with TIO Telecommunication Industry Ombudsman and request others to do, hopefully if they get enough complaints something will be done

Yeah this is ridiculous. I got the sms saying i was subscribed to 2fun.mobi at 8.99/w

I did not give my consent and had to deal with a telstra chick on the phone while she is telling me to ring them and sms them.

The sms's to them are "failed" big surprise. They clearly know about this and i told her so. Its not my job to screw around with 3rd party scams....

She barred premium sms on my.account
If i get charged next bill I'll be pissed.

I finally received a call from a rather sullen lady informing me that hotxl on my mobile account has been removed. Now waiting for my next Telstra bill ... just to make doubly sure :-).

The most annoying bit about this has been the stress created and time wasted in chasing up this issue. Telstra is now increasingly resembling an out of control rogue organisation that seriously has got to be pulled into line. The Telstra consultant I was speaking with at the Telstra shop just walked away when quizzed about this. He didn't want to know, despite the entry on the Telstra bill. He just advised me to ring the HotXL guys. Now .. to sell all my Telstra shares .. :-)

Yes. This happen to me today for HOTXL via Telstra. I received a text stating I have been subscribed which I first thought just a scam message and ignored it. But actually telstra has charged me. I called up telstra , and they stated they will banned future charges. But I have already paid $9. I reported this to

http://www.scamwatch.gov.au

I suggest any victims also should report this to the above.
Thanks.

Welcome to the brave new world of Cyber Crime.Same as others. Pop up window while while tethered to mobile followed by text. My message said I'd been subscribed to Funnyvid.mobi for $9.99/wk I used opt out number to text stop and received the follow up message saying I'd been unsubscribed. I contacted Optus who saw I'd been billed $9.98. They are handling it now.Like others I don't understand how this clearly criminal behavior is allowed to go on. I felt powerless and violated no less so than if someone had stuck a gun in my face in the street and demanded my money. This must be stopped. Rant over take care everyone.

While serving my laptop with my mobile hotspot I was sent a text saying 'Hi you have subscribed to FunnyVid costing you $6.99/wk on your next bill. https://funnyvid.mobi. Optout SMS STOP to 19789098 or 1300364054. This was after the web site popped up on my PC.

I've now barred premium SMS on our telstra portal and will be sending an email to Telstra support to ensure there are no charges to my account!

I was using my wireless hotspot and received a text telling me I was subscribed to HOTXL.mobi costing $8.99/week... Like others comments here I never subscribed. I contacted Telstra and my account manager who will ensure I'm not charged - recommend everyone do the same as the Telco's must be aware of this by now. The law needs to catch up with technology.

I too had the exact same problem above, which I am confident happened when I used my mobile phone for tethering a laptop. Fortunately for me I didn't have sufficient funds on my prepaid account when I received these text messages.

I contacted Telstra’s online help chat and they offered to turn off premium messages, which has affectively barred HotXl. Although I had to change my prepaid selection, I now have a better prepaid deal as a result. A win out of a bad situation.

It was my first time using Telstra’s live chat, and they fixed my problem at 1:00AM, many thanks to Mark.E and his online team. A job well done ☺

This action is simply CRIMINAL and they should be jailed!
I hope all phone companies wise up and develop some method of blocking known scamming phone numbers, so the customer doesn’t have to ask the question WTF.

Scammers who take your money without your knowledge or permission, Premium Charges to mobile accounts post or prepaid.
I have contacted Optus who advised me the charges where from Digital Turbine so I did some research to find this info.

http://www.digitalturbine.com/
level 2/221 Miller St North Sydney 2060
Ph.0299258888

After some more research I found that they are also known as Mirror Image Access (Australia) Pty Ltd and they are some dodgy Telco who Offer "Premium Support" and still have a phone number but website has been taken down.

A week ago I was using my portable wifi hotspot to browse the Internet on my laptop. I received a text from this number with the same message as most have posted here, saying it was from HOT XL. After I got the text I looked on my computer and there was a pop up window that said "thank you for subscribing" etc. (Obviously I didn't actually click on anything to subscribe.)

I tried to text STOP to the number to unsubscribe, but a warning script popped up on my phone that I would be charged to text that number, so I didn't send it.

I called up Telstra a couple of days later and I was told that they would halt all third parties from contacting me or charging me. And they said if anything showed up on my bill they would waver it. I didn't receive any more messages from the number until tonight (exactly one week later, to the minute), and I received two messages in a row with the same message as the first one. I am going to wait until I get this month's bill to check and make sure I didn't get charged, however even if I don't, I might have to contact Telstra again so they can block the messages.

I will be reporting this to Spam watch.

Why wuld my service provider (Optus) entertain the idea to engage with HotXL and allow them to invoice for scams directed to their customers?

The Telcos would have an obligation to advise their clients in advance of any additional services/charges etc

The practise MUST BE STOPPED

Just received a text from HotXL saying I have subscribed to their service for $8.99 per week. At no stage did I opt into this, but going through my browser history the site was one that popped up as an ad that I closed before it had even finished loading.

I have contacted Telstra who have block the contact numbers and spending limit with that company. After reading all the other complaints I realised that my phone was also being used as a personal hotspot, I was so concerned how they got my number!!

Surely this cant be legal?!?!

I also got an unsolicited text saying I'd signed up to HotXL and it was charging me 8.99 while using my work phone as a wifi hotspot. I'm reluctant to reply stop to the number as to not be charged for a premium number cost or that it will end up signing me up to something. Looks like I'll need to sort it out with Telstra.

I received a sms saying :

"Hi you've subscribed to HotXL cost you 8.99/week on your next bill. wwwhotxl.mobi optout SMS Stop 19789150 or 1300364054"

Just prior to receiving this message I was searching for how to backup my old ZTE phone and was on a foreign language website. I clicked an ad up the top by mistake, and then I immediately received the message on my current phone which was charging from my computer and being used as a wifi modem. I believe this is how they may of obtained my phone number.

Contacted Telstra but was informed they could not cancel the subscription as I was the one who had subscribed, even after I explained I had not. They told me to reply to the 1978 number with "Stop" and they would waive the fee. I got a reply saying I had been unsubscribed. I also blocked my access to premium sms services. Hopefully this is the end of the matter, and I forwarded the message to ACMAs scam number, 0429999888
